A Practical Way to Explore Western Crete

Crete is not an island you experience in a hurry. Distances, landscapes and the variety of places to visit make flexibility essential. With your own car, you can adjust your plans at any time, avoid crowded locations and enjoy a more relaxed and personal travel experience. From Chania, some of the island’s most iconic destinations are within reach. Drive along the coast to discover Falassarna and Elafonissi, or head towards more remote areas where you can experience a quieter and more authentic side of Crete.

Travelling by car makes it easier to plan your day according to your preferences, stop along the way and explore places that are not part of the typical tourist routes. Road conditions in western Crete are generally good, but some routes, especially towards more remote beaches, may include narrow or unpaved sections.

Expert Advice

When driving in Crete, it is important to be aware that certain destinations, such as Balos Beach, involve rough terrain that is not suitable for standard vehicles. For your safety and comfort, as well as to protect the condition of our vehicles, we recommend avoiding these routes.

Top Routes to Explore from Chania

Starting your journey from Chania Airport gives you direct access to some of the most impressive routes and landscapes in Crete. Each direction offers a completely different experience, allowing you to discover the island at your own pace.

One of the most popular routes is towards the west coast, where you can drive to Falassarna Beach, known for its wide sandy shore and stunning sunsets. Continuing further south, you can explore Elafonissi Beach, famous for its unique pink sand and shallow turquoise waters — ideal for a full-day trip.

For a more authentic and relaxed experience, head towards the southwest coast. Destinations such as Paleochora and Sougia offer a quieter atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and a more traditional side of Crete, away from the crowds. These routes combine beautiful coastal drives with impressive natural scenery.

If you prefer mountain landscapes, the route towards Omalos Plateau and the entrance of Samaria Gorge provides a completely different setting, with panoramic views and cooler temperatures during the summer months. This drive is perfect for those who want to experience the inland beauty of the island.

Closer to Chania, you can enjoy shorter and more comfortable drives along the coastline, visiting areas such as Agia Marina, Platanias and Kolymbari, combining easy access with a wide range of beaches, restaurants and seaside spots.

Chania itself may be a relatively small city, but it has a long and rich history. The Venetian monuments and the picturesque alleys of the old town create a unique atmosphere that captivates every visitor. Most attractions are located around the old harbor, where you can admire the famous Egyptian lighthouse, one of the most iconic landmarks of the city.

While staying in Chania, you can explore important cultural sites such as the Old Town, the Venetian Port, the Tombs of Venizelos, Ancient Kydonia and the Archaeological Museum of Chania, all offering a deeper insight into the island’s history.

If you enjoy nature, the wider region of Chania offers many impressive natural attractions. From the Samaria Gorge and the Aradena Gorge to the Botanical Park and Gardens, the springs of Argyroupolis and Lake Kournas, there are countless opportunities to experience the natural beauty of Crete.

For those who wish to visit Balos Lagoon, it is important to note that access by car involves rough terrain and is not recommended. A very popular and comfortable alternative is to take a daily boat trip, which allows you to reach Balos safely while also visiting the impressive Gramvousa Island and its historic fortress — an experience that combines both natural beauty and history.

Beaches of Chania

Gramvousa: The uninhabited island opposite the homonymous peninsula, accessible by boat from Kissamos. The wonderful beach of Gramvousa has sand, turquoise waters and few trees. You can also stroll through the island's ruined fortress and see the shipwreck by the shore.

Balos: One of the most impressive, photographed and popular beaches of Crete. Its blue-green shallow waters, white sand and wild beauty remind of exotic places. Access is by boat from Kissamos, where you can admire the natural beauties of wild and tame Gramvousa as well as the castle, before reaching the blue-green lagoon of Balos.

Falasarna: One of the most famous beaches of Crete and Greece, with a magnificent view of the sunset. It is quite wide, with light colored sand and turquoise waters that make up an exotic setting. It has umbrellas, canteens, infrastructure for water sports and a beach volleyball court. As it is exposed to the western winds, it is ideal for wind and kite-surfing.

Elafonisi: Awarded several times for its enchanting natural beauty, Elafonisi or the "pink-sand beach", is a uniquely beautiful long peninsula, on either side of which are formed wonderful coves with pink and white sand and crystal clear turquoise waters reminiscent of a Caribbean setting. The eastern side of the beach is organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, showers, canteens, changing rooms and a lifeguard.

Marathi: It is located east of the city of Chania, very close to the airport. It looks into the gulf of Souda and because it has a southern orientation, it is usually windless and peaceful compared to the rest of the northern coasts of Crete. It has two beautiful beaches, with white sand and shallow waters, ideal for families with small children. The 2 beaches are separated from each other by a small harbor and its pier. They are quite organized and with all the necessary amenities.
Directly across from Marathi, at a very close distance is the small islet of Palaia Souda (Paleosuda), which you can visit either by pedal boat, SUP board or even swimming. There is a small pine forest on the island, and although its shores are sharp and steep, they are popular with those who love diving and snorkeling.

Seitan Limania: Beautiful tiny, long, narrow beach formed within vertical cliffs. The wild landscape, the clear blue waters and the white sand will enchant you. Access is via a short but very steep path (10-15 minutes) and it is recommended to wear closed shoes for the descent. In July and August the beach is very crowded and since it is quite small in size, there is a chance that you won't find a place to sit at all.

Fragokastelo: One of the most famous beaches of the island, famous for its Venetian castle that is literally next to the sea. It has a sandy beach and shallow crystal waters and is ideal for families with children. In the area you will also find rooms for rent, cafes, traditional taverns and other shops.

Paleochora: Paleochora has two beaches, Pachia Ammos, a long sandy beach with crystal clear waters, also awarded with a blue flag, and Votsala beach, which, as its name suggests, is made of pebbles. Get ready for adventure, as there are all kinds of water sports at Pachia Ammos, the main beach of Paleochora.
